Adding a user and granting that user root privileges is one of the many tasks of a system admin. Once a user has been added and granted root privileges they’ll be able to login to your Ubuntu VPS and perform vital functions for the upkeep of the system. Afterward, they’ll be able to use sudo before commands to perform elevated tasks. In this quick tutorial, we’ll show you how to add a new user and grant root permissions.

Preflight

  • These instructions are intended specifically for adding a user on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
  • We’ll be working from a Liquid Web Core Managed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS server, and I’ll be logged in as root.

Step 1: Add the Username

In my example, I’ll be adding my cat’s name, Tom, using the adduser command. Replace tom with your desired username. During this time, the system will also ask of me details from my user. Feel free to skip these details by pressing enter and eventually it asks us to confirm that the info is correct, leading us to a new user added.

Step 2: Grant Root Privileges to the User

visudo

The command above leads us to the /etc/sudoers.tmp file, where we can view the following code:# User privilege specification
root ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL

After the root user line, you will add in your new user with the same format for us to grant admin privileges.

tom ALL=(ALL:ALL)ALL

Once you’ve added the permission, save and exit the file by using the following process. (In Ubuntu 18.04, nano is the default editor, so we need to use the ctrl+x, y keystrokes to save and exit the file.)

Step 3: Verify User Has Privileges

If you’ve followed the instructions correctly then this user will be able to run commands like, update, using the sudo: European langaugesmusic for your church services near me.

sudo apt-get update

To verify the named user ID for each of the products and services listed:

  1. Go to https://manage.autodesk.com.

  2. Sign in with your Contract Manager or Software Coordinator ID and your password.

    The list of products and services you have access to is displayed.

  3. Click the arrow next to the product or service to see the contract information.

  4. At the top left, under the PRODUCTS & SERVICES, hover next to 'All' and click REPORTING to verify the credits available for the selected product or service.

    The Individual Cloud Credits and Shared Cloud Credits used by all users is displayed for each contract by product or service.

  5. Click the arrow next to the Contract.

    The Cloud credit usage by all users on the contract by service (in this example) is displayed.

  6. To see the Users' ID and Cloud credit usage by users, click Usage by Users.

To add a user or users:

  1. Go to https://manage.autodesk.com.

  2. Sign in with your Contract Manager or Software Coordinator ID and your password.

  3. Do either of the following:
    • At the top right, click .
    • At the top left, hover over and click USERS.
  4. At the top right, click .

  5. If you want to add multiple users simultaneously, enter the user's first name, followed by a space, the user's last name, followed by a space, the user's e-mail address, followed by a semi-colon, and then enter additional users, as shown in the example.

  6. If you want to add a user or one user at a time, click Add Users and enter the required information.
  7. Click the check box if you want to add access to the user(s) now.
  8. Click Save & Close.

To provide benefits (or entitlements) to the new user account:

  1. Continue from the previous last step.
  2. In the Edit Access page, click the Assign All check box for the Benefits and Products & Services and click Save.
  3. Expand the Products & Services section and ensure all the services are assigned to the user.
  4. Make sure the 'Desktop Access to Products' service is assigned to the user otherwise the user will not be authorized to start the product with his login.
